'I was told I would never walk again'

Martin Birkhans has battled against illness and injury to walk again at the age of 86.

Mr Birkhans had survived a 50:50 chance of dying from sepsis and pneumonia and was also recovering from a broken hip.

But over two years the Edinburgh grandfather worked tirelessly with physios to get his legs working and can now even climb stairs at his nursing home, Cramond Residence.
