Alexander backs 'legal and decisive' Scots referendum

A future referendum on Scottish independence will be the focus of a statement by Scottish Secretary Michael Moore to the House of Commons.

Ahead of that announcement, Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury and a Scottish Lib Dem MP, said the government was keen to bring forward proposals now in order to avoid years of legal wrangling between Holyrood and Westminster.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "What we are trying to do today is set out a proposal to allow Scotland to have what the SNP promised which was a referendum on independence which was fare, legal and decisive."
