Swansea prison crowding creates tinderbox - Elfyn Llwyd

An MP has called for action to address the problem of overcrowding in Swansea prison, after it was found to be the third most overpopulated jail in England and Wales.

Elfyn Llwyd, Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd and deputy chair of the Justice Select Committee, said the situation created "a very dangerous environment, both for the prisoners themselves and for the people who work in the prisons".

Built for 240 prisoners, Swansea prison now holds 436. The Prison Reform Trust, which has carried out analysis into prisoners numbers, has called for more community sentences to reduce the prison population and re-offending rates.

Mr Llwyd told Peter Johnson the situation in Swansea was not acceptable.
