Young musicians hold concert over Newport council music cuts

A group of young musicians held an impromptu concert outside Newport council on Wednesday protesting against cuts to a service that helps children learn to play instruments.

The council plans to reduce the Gwent music support service budget by around 40%.

It says that while it recognises the value of the service it needs to concentrate on what it calls "front line education".

Florence Mayo has been playing with the band for three years, and at Monday's protest she spoke to BBC Wales reporter Jordan Davies.

Welsh actress Caroline Sheen, who has played various roles on stage in the West End and at other venues across London, the UK and America, said the cuts would have a great effect on the people who use the service.

She spoke to Peter Johnson on BBC Radio Wales.
