NHS Direct Wales 'turned off' for 999 calls, Unison claims

Up to half the callers to NHS Direct in Wales have abandoned those calls at certain times, according to The Royal College of Nursing.

They also say the number of staff on the call line has been reduced by two thirds.

The revelation follows a claim by Unison that the service is switched off sometimes so staff can deal with 999 calls.

The NHS in Wales has faced "unprecedented" levels of hospital admissions this month.
