Baroness Thatcher: 'Over generous' benefits legacy still felt, says Morgan

Political figures from around the world have been paying tribute to Lady Thatcher, who died yesterday at the age of 87.

The former prime minister led a radical Conservative government for 11 years from 1979 to 1990.

Her time in office was marked by privatisation of state assets, and a year-long stand-off with unions during the miners' strike of 1984-85.

Sir Stephen Sherbourne, Baroness Thatcher's political secretary, and the former leader of the Labour Party in Wales and first minister, Rhodri Morgan, spoke to Oliver Hides on BBC Radio Wales about her legacy.

Mr Morgan said it was a coincidence Baroness Thatcher died on the day the coalition government started cutting back on the "over generous" welfare state she helped create.
