Margaret Thatcher: 'Saddening effect' on the valleys

Political figures from around the world have been paying tribute to Margaret Thatcher, who died on Monday at the age of 87.

The former prime minister led a radical Conservative government for 11 years from 1979 to 1990.

A major event of her time in office was a year-long stand-off with unions during the miners' strike of 1984-85.

BBC Radio Wales' Oliver Hides spoke to Ivor England, an ex-miner and former secretary of Maerdy miners' lodge, and Sir Deian Hopkin, a historian of the labour movement.

Mr England said Mrs Thatcher had a "saddening effect" on the south Wales valleys, particularly Rhondda.
