Rorke's Drift hero John Williams Fielding has new memorial

A new gravestone has been dedicated to a Welsh soldier who won the Victoria Cross in the legendary defence of Rorke's Drift in the Anglo-Zulu wars.

A memorial service and parade took place in Cwmbran for John Williams VC - born John Fielding - one of 11 decorated for bravery after the battle in 1879.

The original memorial eroded and needed replacing.

The events at Rorke's Drift were immortalised in the 1964 film Zulu starring Michael Caine.

Paul Heaney reports.
