Coleg Harlech auctions art to clear debts

A collection of art and rare books went under the hammer as part of attempts to stave off a cash crisis at an adult education college in Gwynedd.

Coleg Harlech revealed late last year it had a £900,000 budget shortfall.

Proceeds from the sale are being tallied although the college's management say they hope to raise around £100,000 from it.

The auction is part of a financial recovery plan for the college, which provides adult education for 5,000 students.

The main item, a Kyffin Williams oil painting worth around £40,000 did not sell.
