Minister's action over Betsi Cadwaladr health board

Health Minister Mark Drakeford said he found it "unacceptable" that the health board responsible for managing NHS care in north Wales could not be confident it was "on top of the job" it had to do.

He was speaking after Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) and the Wales Audit Office (WAO) found a series of problems at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).

Set up in 2009, BCUHB runs all aspects of the NHS in the six counties of north Wales, from family doctors and dentists to hospitals.

Mr Drakeford said the findings of the report damage people's views of the health service as a whole and that's why action was being taken immediately.

He was referring to the chairman and chief executive stepping down from their posts, adding that the jobs were being advertised immediately.
