Early years plan to help close education standards gap

A ten-year plan to close the gap in educational standards between children from the wealthiest and poorest backgrounds has been launched by the Welsh government.

Ministers say they are committed to improving life chances for children from a very young age by boosting support for families.

Parents will be encouraged to get involved in their children's learning and support will be given to new businesses offering childcare.

Flu vaccinations in winter and healthier school meals will also be offered.

Education minister Huw Lewis says action is needed because the gap is wider in Wales than any other part of the UK.
