Training deaths 'should not happen', says Wales' army chief

Wales' most senior army officer has said the deaths of soldiers in training should not happen.

Brigadier Philip Napier was responding to a question about the deaths of two army reservists in an SAS training exercise in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday.

He made his comments during a visit by Wales' first minister, Carwyn Jones, to see cadets undergoing rock climbing and water exercises in the Brecon Beacons.

One of the two soldiers who died was Lance Corporal Craig Roberts, 24, from Penrhyn Bay, Conwy.

A third soldier is seriously ill after the incident which is thought to have involved six soldiers collapsing.

Brigadier Napier told BBC Wales' Nick Pallit that part of the training would have involved what to do in the hot weather conditions.
