'Wrexham prison not a tool for business regeneration'

News that the biggest prison in the UK will be built in Wrexham has been welcomed by politicians and business leaders in north Wales but critics have concerns so-called super prisons do not work.

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said the prison should be seen as a last resort and not an opportunity for business regeneration, adding that smaller prisons were more successful than larger institutions.

David Hanson, Labour MP for Delyn and a former prisons minister, said it would mean at least 900 prisoners from the area could be detained locally rather than over the border in England.
