Rhodri Talfan Davies: BBC Wales cuts left programming less 'rich'

Cuts in spending at BBC Cymru Wales which led to a decision to protect "bedrock" services like news and political coverage have led to programming being less "rich" than desirable, its director has said.

Rhodri Talfan Davies said a 20% reduction in spending over the past six or seven years had had consequences for areas including comedy and light entertainment.

His comments came after a speech by BBC director-general Tony Hall on Tuesday which said English-language programming from all broadcasters in Wales from and for Wales had been declining for almost a decade.

Speaking to the Sunday Politics programme, Mr Davies said Mr Hall was recognising the funding realities.

"We took a very deliberate decision, and the right decision, to protect our journalism, our news, our politics, our current affairs programmes, but clearly in other areas it's not as rich as we would like to see," he said.
