Hillsborough inquests: John McBrien's mother still in 'pain'

A mother who lost her son in the Hillsborough disaster said the pain of his death has not "gone away".

Joan Hope from Holywell, spoke about her youngest son John McBrien, 18, at the new hearing into the deaths of 96 people at Sheffield Wednesday's football ground during an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest in 1989.

All the families are giving portraits of the victims at the inquests.

She said: "Even today the pain of losing John has not gone away.

"His death was completely devastating to our family - he was such an amazing son and brother and we all miss him deeply."

He had been studying at Holywell High School and he had been given an unconditional offer to go to Liverpool University, but lost his life before being able to take up his place.

As his mother spoke a picture of him was shown on TV screens in court, it was a picture taken after he won a mock US presidential debate at school.
