South Wales Police launch domestic abuse strategy

South Wales Police have launched their strategy to tackle violence against women and girls.

The plan lays out how they will work more closely with other public service professionals such as doctors, midwives, housing officers and teachers to provide support for victims.

Last week the force had to apologise for failings in the case of Charmaine Lewis, who was attacked by her partner with a claw hammer when police failed to carry out checks which would have revealed her partner's violent past.

Sophie Howe, the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner for South Wales, told BBC Radio Wales' Mai Davies the strategy was based on evidence that women would experience an average of 35 incidents of violence in the home before reporting it to the police.
