'Disappointment' for Fred Evans

The Commonwealth Games opens in Glasgow on Wednesday night with the Queen and heads of state at the ceremony at Celtic Park, where gymnast Frankie Jones will be flying the flag for Team Wales.

The team's chef de mission admits their target of 27 medals will be tough to hit following a number of high-profile withdrawals in the run-up to the event.

The team faced further disappointment on Tuesday when Olympic silver medal-winning boxer Fred Evans was forced to pull out after having his accreditation refused.

In April the welterweight was ordered to pay a total of £1,228 in fines and costs after admitting his part in a nightclub assault in Birmingham.

Sarah Powell, chief executive of Sport Wales, told BBC Radio Wales' Oliver Hides said she was "bitterly disappointed" for Evans but they now had to concentrate on the rest of the team.
