Ex-50st Zac Smith man demands NHS Wales obesity rethink
A former 50-stone man who paid for bariatric surgery in India because NHS Wales deemed him not to be a serious case, says the health service must rethink how it treats morbidly obese patients.
Zac Smith, 40, of Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan, paid £9,000 for surgery.
He lost 27-stone after the gastric sleeve procedure, which was refused in Wales because he did not have high blood pressure or diabetes.
NHS Wales plans to increase bariatric surgery from 80 to 300 a year by 2018.
Mr Smith and consultant bariatric surgeon Jonathan Barry spoke to BBC Wales.
