Three rescued from Menai Strait after sea scooter fails

Three men were rescued from the Menai Strait after a sea scooter broke down, said Holyhead coastguard.

One man swam out to help two men stranded on the machine near the Anglesey Sea Zoo, external on Monday.

The swimmer and one of the riders were rescued by the RAF Valley helicopter; the third man declined help, restarted the sea scooter and rode to a harbour.

The rescue happened at around 20:30 BST and the two men rescued by helicopter were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital.

The RNLI said it understood the RAF helicopter was diverted from its previous task of transferring a patient from Bangor Hospital to a hospital in Stoke in order to help with the rescue.
