Nato summit: Police numbers 'important'

Police have confirmed four people have been arrested in Cardiff during a demonstration against the Nato summit in Newport.

About 250 protesters demonstrated outside Cardiff Castle on Thursday evening where world leaders attended a dinner.

The number of campaigners at both protests in Newport and Cardiff was lower than excepted.

But South Wales Police said the 9,000-strong police presence was necessary to deter trouble and protect all the officials attending.

Ch Supt Alun Thomas, the silver commander of the operation, said despite the first day of the event passing off peacefully there was still work to do.
