'Robotic orchestra' performs Doctor Who theme music

A "robotic orchestra", partly built by Aberystwyth University staff, has taken part in this year's Royal Institution Christmas Lectures.

Performing its own version of the classic Doctor Who theme, the instruments used are made up of a vacuum cleaner, a computer printer and church organ pipes.

The electronic ensemble, which is led by a "classic" robot conductor, was also joined by four musicians.

The orchestra features in the final Christmas Lecture, which is broadcast on BBC Four on New Year's Eve at 20:00 GMT.
