Lord Mervyn Davies urges better rail and mobile services

A former trade minister who is working to bring more financial services jobs to Wales said there is a risk firms could be put off unless rail and mobile services are improved.

Lord Mervyn Davies, who is a member of the Welsh government's financial and professional services sector advisory panel, external, said rail services from London to south Wales were "not good enough" and on-board wi-fi was not "robust enough".

First Great Western, which runs the mainline service from Paddington, said £7.5bn was being invested in electrification from London to the west over the next five years, including to Cardiff and Swansea, which would cut journey times by 20 minutes.

A spokesman said a new fleet was due to be introduced in 2017, 3,000 extra passengers were being accommodated in standard class at peak time and free wi-fi on high speed services would be completed in the coming months.
