EU exit: UKIP says UK can still make farming payments
The UK could still make the farming payments currently paid by the European Union even if it left the EU, Wales UKIP leader Nathan Gill has said.
Mr Gill was speaking in response to comments by Welsh deputy minister for farming Rebecca Evans, who said an EU exit would be catastrophic for the farming industry.
She told Good Morning Wales on Monday membership of the EU gave farmers access to 500 million consumers, adding: "We're able to sell without any tariffs or quotas.
"Of course, 80% of our farmers at the moment are reliant on the basic payment subsidies that they receive from Europe."
The European Commissioner for farming and rural development, Phil Hogan, is due to visit the Royal Welsh Show on Monday and the topic is expected to be a central part of the debate at the annual event.
