Was the Welsh settlement in Patagonia a success?

The Welsh settlement in Patagonia, Y Wladfa Gymreig, is 150 years old.

On 28 July 1865, the first settlers arrived in Argentina in search of a new life.

The colony's founding fathers wanted to create a new Wales where people would be free to follow their non-conformist faith, celebrate their culture and traditions and use the Welsh language in every aspect of their lives.

But was the attempt a success or failure?

Y Wladfa expert Prof Wyn James from the school of Welsh American studies at Cardiff University gives his verdict.
