UK steel industry 'needs more support', says union official

The UK government could have done far more to support the steel industry, a union official has said following the loss of 250 jobs at Tata Steel's site in Newport.

Sue Lewis, of Community, said UK firms need more support to meet rising energy prices, although she said changes were coming in next year.

First Minister Carwyn Jones also said the UK government should do more to help, but it said it was giving £35m to steel firms to offset their costs.

Tata Steel announced it was to mothball part of its plant in Llanwern on Wednesday.
