Archive: Howard Marks arrested in 1988 and in US jail
Former cannabis smuggler turned author Howard Marks has talked about having no regrets and that he is happy, as a second memoir Mr Smiley: My Last Pill and Testament is published.
Marks told BBC Wales arts and media correspondent Huw Thomas he is "living rather than dying of cancer" after being diagnosed a year ago.
Here is archive from 1988 when Marks was arrested in Spain. He ridiculed his description by the FBI as the "Marco Polo" of the drug trafficking world.
He was extradited to the United States in 1989 and sentenced to 25 years after admitting racketeering.
Marks was interviewed in prison in the early 1990s and maintained his view that there was no harm in cannabis.
He was released in 1995 after being granted parole.
