Virtual reality: Watching sport in 360 degrees from your sofa

Ever dreamed of walking out on to the Principality Stadium pitch to hear the crowd belting out Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau before a rugby international? The reality could be closer than you think.

Virtual reality allows people to experience a 360 degree look at sports, concerts and a host of other events.

Filmed using six cameras on what looks like an over-sized die mounted on a pole, the camera operator (or drone) is at the heart of the event, filming all around them, with the images stitched together to create a virtual reality jigsaw.

Put simply, you can stand on the touchline while the Wales team and crowd sings the national anthem and wherever you turn your head - you look.

Martin McCabe, managing director at Atticus Digital, said he expects the use of virtual reality to be commonplace within the next couple of years.

"Not only can you be there in the moment, but you can choose the location. It's a whole new experience."

BBC Wales has trialled the equipment to see how it could be used in future and filmed the anthem before the Wales v Scotland Six Nations match.

Although watching your favourite team or band in 360 degrees in real time is not yet a reality, you could one day find yourself in the thick of the action from the comfort of your own sofa.
