M4 congestion affects business profit, CBI boss says

Work on a planned M4 relief road cannot start soon enough for businesses because congestion is having an effect on their "bottom line", CBI director general Carolyn Fairbairn said.

She said hold-ups and bridge toll fees were costing one Welsh haulage firm £500,000 a year.

"This is about real costs and the competitiveness of Welsh industry," she said.

The latest proposals - first put forward 25 years ago - are for a 15-mile (24km) motorway and six-lane bridge over the River Usk to ease problems from the bottleneck at the Brynglas tunnels at Newport.
