Port Talbot steel staff put through hell, Stephen Kinnock claims

Port Talbot steel workers and their families have been "put through hell" as they continue to wait to hear if owners Tata plan to sell the plant, local MP Stephen Kinnock has said.

The board of Tata Steel is meeting in India to discuss the future of its UK steel operations.

It is expected to "pause" the sale of the main Port Talbot plant, but go ahead with the sale of its speciality business, which employs 2,000 people in Hartlepool, Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Tata is thought to be in less of a hurry to sell because of rising steel prices and signs of government support.

Aberavon MP Stephen Kinnock said: "It's really important now that Tata Steel comes forward with a clear timetable and clear answers - are they going to sell the business?"

But Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns said a pause in the sale was a "positive step".
