Family doctors face crisis of numbers, GP Survival Wales says

The "crisis" facing GP services in parts of Wales is "getting worse" with more practices than ever facing an uncertain future, says the British Medical Association.

It comes as figures obtained by a grassroots group representing family doctors suggest a big spike in the number of GP practices being handed back to health boards to manage.

Dr Sophie Quinney, a representative of GP Survival Wales, said: "Yes there is a GP crisis - there's a crisis of numbers, there's a crisis of funding and there's a crisis of demand".

One GP has just handed back a practice in the Rhondda after working on her own for a year and saying she was close to burn-out over her workload.

A senior health official acknowledged a greater pace of change was needed.
