Usk car crash survivor on Wales air ambulance rescue

Motorist Sarah Williams, now 28, who survived a horrific car crash near Usk in Monmouthshire in 2015, was saved by quick thinking medical staff and by being flown to hospital by air ambulance.

It comes as independent experts are looking at designating Wales' first major trauma centre at either Cardiff or Swansea.

Ms Williams was given an emergency blood transfusion at the scene and her lung was re-inflated when it collapsed.

She was also treated on board the Wales Air Ambulance on the journey to hospital in Cardiff, where she was treated for a serious head injury, as well as internal bleeding and six broken ribs.

The air ambulance by-passed other hospitals so she could get the neurological treatment she needed at the University Hospital of Wales.

This would be how the system would operate once a major trauma centre has been set up.
