Starting school: Why summer-born pupils 'need year delay'

A mother has spoken of her frustration at trying to get a school to delay her summer-born son's start date by a year.

Rachel Evans's son Tal is now aged nine and happy at his primary school in Swansea.

But the first school she tried flatly refused to take him after she asked if he could start aged five rather than four.

She is among parents in Wales calling for more flexibility over when summer-born children can start primary school.

They want ministers to issue councils with guidance over requests to defer entry.

The Welsh Government said a school admissions code review will start this month.
