Coronavirus survivor from Cardiff celebrates birthday he was not expected to make

A retired restaurant owner has celebrated his 86th birthday - one his family feared he would not live to see.

In June, Peter Tozzo was in hospital with coronavirus and was one of the few patients treated at the Dragon's Heart field hospital at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Mr Tozzo and his son were able to wave at each other over the River Taff and spoke using a phone held by a nurse.

The relatives had been told to "prepare for the worst" but after a dramatic improvement he was able to leave hospital and is now he is being looked after at a Cardiff care home.

As a gift, Mr Tozzo was given a portrait of his care, drawn by artist Dan Peterson, who carried out a series of illustrations at the Dragon's Heart hospital to raise money for charity.

Son Simon Tozzo, who paid his father a birthday visit in the garden, said: "His recovery is miraculous. Although he can't walk far, he is bright, alert and making jokes.

“Every time I see him, I’m happier. It’s miraculous than an 86-year-old man can be better than he was after what he’s been though.”
