Welsh Tory chair Jonathan Evans MP attacks UKIP switches

The defection of two Tory MPs to UKIP is "contrived and choreographed" says the chairman of the Welsh Conservatives.

Cardiff North MP Jonathan Evans said the switch in allegiances by Mark Reckless and Douglas Carswell represented a "very small group" on the extreme right of the Conservative Party.

The issue has overshadowed the start of the Tory conference which is getting underway in Birmingham.

Mr Evans told Vaughan Roderick on BBC Radio Wales' Sunday Supplement show that he thought there was an element within their party who wanted them to lose next year's general election.
