Gallipoli sacrifice of Penmaenmawr 'quarry boys' honoured

First Minister Carwyn Jones has paid tribute to a group of quarry workers who died at Gallipoli after joining the army to serve in World War One.

He laid a wreath in Penmaenmawr, Conwy county, to mark the 100th anniversary of the notorious battle on the beaches in Turkey.

More than 100 "quarry boys" joined a "pals" battalion to fight for their country, but few survived.

Mr Jones, who also opened an exhibition about the Welsh at Gallipoli, said those who died there in 1915 would have been saddened to know that the "war to end all wars" did not succeed in ending conflict around the world.
