Severn Tunnel to shut for six weeks for engineering work

Engineers are preparing to close the Severn Tunnel for six weeks to upgrade the infrastructure ready for electric trains.

The south Wales to England rail link will shut on Monday, adding an extra 40 minutes to journeys to London and the south west.

London trains will be diverted via Gloucester, while bus services will replace trains to Bristol.

Once electrification is complete and the new stock takes to the track, journey times to London are expected to be cut by 20 minutes.
