Christine Lagarde visits India to promote IMF bid

French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is in India on the latest leg of a world tour aimed at drumming up support for her bid to head the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Ms Lagarde has promised to support demands from emerging countries to have more say in the running of the IMF.

But her Indian host, the finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, was guarded in his backing, saying that the new IMF head should be chosen on merit alone.

From Delhi the BBC's Mark Dummett reports.
