'Fiscal cliff' is Obama’s top priority

President Obama was faced with some fairly sobering headlines as he returned to the White House after his re-election; the markets are having an attack of nerves over fears that the United States will fall off the so-called fiscal cliff - dramatic tax increases and spending cuts will kick in automatically at the end of the year if Mr Obama cannot reach a deal with Congress. David Cameron will phone the president this afternoon for the first time since his re-election.
