Fisherman: 'I slipped below the surface and proceeded to drown'

Irish fisherman James McCarthy has described the moment he nearly died after falling into near freezing waters in the Gulf of Alaska.

Mr McCarthy, 36, from Ringaskiddy in Co Cork, survived up to 25 minutes in one of the world's most dangerous areas of ocean.

He was eventually rescued by crewman Makodo Odlin who dived in the sea and dragged him out.

His brother Peter - owner of their fishing boat - then helped keep him warm with bottles of hot water until a rescue helicopter arrived.

When he landed at Coastguard Air Station Kodiak, his older brother John was there to meet him.
