Relatives who pay ransom money 'have no other option'

Ransom payments made to kidnappers are directly fuelling terrorism, the UK Foreign Office has warned.

But when a person is taken hostage, it seems families feel "no other option" other than to pay up.

Nigel Brennan, who was held for 15 months in Somalia, told BBC Radio 5 live's Victoria Derbyshire: "I didn't want my family to pay the ransom... but anyone who puts themselves in my family's shoes would have done the same thing."

Stephen Collett, who paid a ransom for his sister Rachel Chandler and her husband Paul (pictured), added: "It is wrong to pay ransoms but... there's always someone whose family can pay and will because they have no other option."
