UK army training Kurdish troops in Iraq

A "specialist team" of 12 UK soldiers is training Kurdish forces fighting Islamic State militants in Iraq, the Ministry of Defence has said.

It said troops from the Yorkshire Regiment were training Iraqi Kurds to use UK-supplied heavy machine guns.

President Obama and military commanders from more than 20 countries are meeting in Washington to discuss how to halt the advance of Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria.

It is now reported that IS militants have fought their way into the town centre of Kobane, on the Syrian Turkish border, despite continued American airstrikes and some heavy clashes with Kurdish forces.

The BBC's Gary O'Donoghue reports.
