Earthquake topples buildings in southern Japan

An earthquake has struck southern Japan, bringing down several buildings, a top government spokesman says.

No tsunami warning was issued after the quake, measured at a preliminary magnitude of 6.4.

The earthquake struck at 21:26 (12:26 GMT) east of Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu, the Japan Meteorological Agency says.
