UN calls for urgent action over mass DR Congo rape

The UN Security Council has held an emergency session to discuss the rape of more than a hundred and fifty women in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

UN peacekeeping troops in the country say they only heard about the mass rape, allegedly carried out by rebel forces late last month more than a week after it happened.

They say locals had failed to tell them of their ordeal, even though patrols twice passed through the village.

Zeinab Badawi reports.
