Police fire 'warning shots' during protests in Tunis

Troops fired warning shots on Thursday in an effort to stop some 1,000 protesters from scaling a wall at the headquarters of Tunisia's former ruling party.

Demonstrators had managed to reach the offices of the Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) when the shots were fired.

Police, blamed for attacking demonstrators in the early weeks of the protests, kept their distance as the demonstrators passed through the barricades.

Tunisia's former president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fled to Saudi Arabia last week after mass protests over unemployment, poverty and corruption.
