UN: 'Thousands waiting to leave Misrata'

Urgent talks are being held at the United Nations to discuss what the British government is calling the dire humanitarian crisis unfolding in western Libya.

The UK's International Development Secretary, who has been meeting with senior UN officials in New York, said Britain would provide new funding to help civilians trapped by the fighting there.

The western city of Misrata has been under constant attack from Colonel Gaddafi's forces for over five weeks.
