UN team starts probe over human rights abuses in Libya

A UN team visiting Tripoli has started investigating allegations of human rights violations in Libya since the start of the Libyan government's crackdown on protesters in February

The team was appointed by the UN Human Rights Council.

Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni, who is leading the delegation, said he had a number of questions about the indiscriminate bombing of civilians, torture, the use of mercenaries and the detention of foreign journalists.

The Libyan government has said it will co-operate with the inquiry.
