Archive: Nelson Mandela released from prison

Nelson Mandela is released from prison in South Africa following the relaxation of apartheid laws, after serving 27 years for treason.

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge describes the scene as Mr Mandela walked free, accompanied by his wife Winnie Mandela and surrounded by huge crowds of supporters.
