Marikana mine shootings marked a year on

A minute's silence and a memorial service will be held on Friday to mark the anniversary of the deaths of 34 miners in police gunfire at the Marikana platinum mine.

The incident, the biggest single loss of civilian life since the end of apartheid, prompted protests demanding better conditions for workers - but locals say very little has changed.

Nomsa Maseko reports from Marikana.
