'We became a friend of the nation' - Mandela's impact on SA's police
South Africa's former police commissioner has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela's contribution in helping to rebuild the country's police force.
George Fivaz was appointed by Mr Mandela to transform the police from enforcers of apartheid to a service for everyone.
He told the BBC's Jon Sopel in Pretoria the police service became ''a friend of the nation, not an enemy of the nation''.
''It was an enormous challenge,'' he added.
