Mandela death: He understood satire, says cartoonist

South Africa's most prominent cartoonist has described Nelson Mandela as a man who understood the importance of satire and free speech.

Jonathan Shapiro's drawings appear in the daily newspapers under the pen name "Zapiro".

He earned Mr Mandela's respect, even though his illustrations where at times critical of the ANC government.

Mr Shapiro shared his thoughts on "a great, great man" with the BBC.
